3.9 Assessment and Reporting Policy (taken from Staff handbook, 2013)

Rationale

Santa Maria College is a Catholic College in the Benedictine tradition. Our students will be strong, compassionate and independent women who are critical thinkers and who seek to live out Gospel values with integrity, hope and joy. Our academic endeavours seek to nurture a search for truth, a spirit of enquiry and a deep love of learning.

The Santa Maria College Assessment and Reporting Policy is designed to nurture and support students so that they may grow to their full potential. Our community values personal responsibility for learning and educational excellence. Students are encouraged to assume responsibility for implementing the diagnostic advice provided through the differing reporting processes. This policy responds to State, Federal Government and Catholic Education Office guidelines and regulations regarding Assessment and Reporting.

Policy

Assessment

Teaching staff at the College will implement assessment that is an ongoing process of gathering, analysing and reflecting on evidence to make informed and consistent judgements to improve future student learning. Assessment for improved student learning and deep understanding requires a range of assessment practices to be used:

  • Assessment FOR learning occurs when teachers use inferences about student progress to inform their teaching
  • Assessment AS learning occurs when students reflect on and monitor their progress to inform their future learning goals
