International Baccalaureate
Santa Maria College is a candidate school of the International
Baccalaureate: Middle Years Program (MYP). In 2010 we will
begin implementing the MYP with the year 7 cohort and the program
will be progressively phased in, from years 7 through to year
10. By 2013 the program will be in full implementation and
our first cohort of students will be MYP graduates at the end of
Year 10. This group of young women will be prepared to tackle
the demands of the Victorian Certificate of Education. The MYP
serves as excellent preparation for the Victorian Certificate of
Education.
IB Middle Years Program
The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) at
Santa Maria is a four-year programme designed to teach students to
become independent learners who can recognise relationships between
school subjects and the world outside. These students can
adapt to new situations and combine relevant knowledge and
practical and social intelligence to solve authentic problems
alone, or in groups.
There are three fundamental concepts underpinning the MYP:
Holistic learning that promotes the discovery of
relationships between areas of study, individuals, communities and
the world.
Intercultural awareness which is concerned with
developing students’ attitudes, knowledge and skills as they learn
about their own and others’ cultures.
Communication that is central to achieving the aims and
objectives of the MYP. This includes verbal and non-verbal
forms as well as use of information and communication
technologies.
CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK
The IB Middle Years Programme provides a thorough study of
various disciplines (see curriculum model)

AREAS OF INTERACTION
Five central elements known as the Areas of Interaction are at the
core of the MYP Programme.
Approaches to Learning is concerned with providing
students with the tools to enable students to take responsibility
for their own learning.
Community and Service begins in the classroom and extends
beyond it, deepening the students’ knowledge and understanding of
the world around them.
Health and Social Education deals with physical, social
and emotional health and intelligence and develops in students a
sense of responsibility for their own wellbeing and for developing
healthy relationships with others.
Environment aims to make students aware of their
interdependence with the environment so that they accept their
responsibility for maintaining an environment fit for the
future.
Human Ingenuity allows students to
explore in multiple ways the processes and products of human
creativity. This is at the core of student-centred learning
where students themselves are placed in situations where they solve
problems by showing creativity and resourcefulness.
The Areas of Interaction are not directly assessed nor awarded
individual grades, since they are lenses rather than
subjects. They are, however, indirectly assessed
