Santa Maria College introduced the Duke of Edinburgh Award in
2005, and students, parents and staff have been thrilled with the
positive holistic outcomes which have been achieved.
The award has four key elements which include new skills, service,
physical recreation and adventure/journey. Skills which students
have gained include bag making, playing a musical instrument and
learning a new language. Service components have seen Santa girls
lending a hand at the Royal Children's Hospital, a women's refuge
and the school library. Physical recreation activities which
students have participated in are netball, dance, athletics and
walking to school (rather than using transport).
The adventure/journey component of the award is fulfilled by
students undertaking an overnight trek and camp at Mount
Macedon.
The program encourages girls to 'move out of their comfort zones',
and the entire school community has been inspired by the excitement
and enthusiasm which the program has generated among college
students.
