Fine Arts
Art, Graphics, Media Painting, sculpture, film editing, digital
photography, publications, graphic design, business skills
and theory are some of the things students learn in Art. Art is
offered from Year 7 and Visual Communication and Media are offered
as electives from Year 9. All are practical subjects which produce
outstanding results. We have state-of-the-art facilities with 4
separate film editing suites and computers in the media and
graphics classrooms. Media has proven to be one of Santa Maria's
most popular subjects with VCE Media classes full in 2008. Many of
our students have gone onto very satisfying and high profile
careers in the world of the arts.
Music & Performing Arts
Our outstanding, professional music staff and facilities make
Santa’s music program first class. All Year 7s study classroom
music for a semester. They may then continue with music as an
elective from Year 8 through to Year 12. All students (whether or
not they study classroom music) have the opportunity of taking part
in the Instrumental Music Program (at an additional cost to school
fees). Santa’s strength is it’s brass/woodwind program but other
instruments such as percussion, guitar and violin are also
available as well as classical and contemporary voice. We have also
recently introduced songwriting and sound engineering courses.
Santa Maria has 4 separate practice rooms, keyboard laboratory and
a fully equipped recording studio.
There are numerous bands and choirs that music students can take
part in as part of the co-curriculum, including a junior band,
concert band, jazz band and symphonic band.
Drama is introduced into the curriculum as an elective in Year 8
and continues to be offered through to VCE. There is a Year 7 Drama
Club for those Year 7s interested in acting.
Our music and performing arts faculties come together each year to
produce a production, be it a musical, a large scale concert or the
Rock Eistedfodd. In 2005, our school production will be Alice in
Wonderland. Our students take a real leadership role in these
productions, from choreography to direction of younger
students.
LOTE - Italian & Japanese
Italian and Japanese are studied for a semester each in Year 7.
Students then choose which language they wish to continue with in
Year 8. Santa Maria has a number of native Italian speakers on
staff and very experienced Japanese teachers. Japanese assistants
visiting from Japan also add an extra dimension to the Japanese
program. One of the highlights of the LOTE program is LOTE week,
which encourages appreciation of culture as well as language.
Language students may also take part in public speaking, poetry and
writing competitions as well as overseas trips to Italy and Japan,
which are an optional co-curricular activity. Santa Maria College
has a sister school in Japan, Seiwa College.
