 Public Speaking
and Debating does wonders for students' language skills and
confidence. At Santa Maria, students can participate in a number of
competitions including: Debating Association of Victoria, Lion
Clubs Debates, Public Speaking competitions and the Plain English
Speaking Award.
Santa Maria students have consistently achieved great success in
these fields over the past years, scooping first place in various
divisions both in the local Watsonia region and at a state
level.
Our past star debaters and public speakers have gone on to
greater heights including lecturing at Melbourne University, public
relations and law school. The school has 8 debating teams in the
DAV competition and Santa often hosts competitions.
There are internal competitions in both disciplines with
training for new Year 7 students. Efforts are recognised through
the presentation of awards. There is also the fun element of public
speaking as shown in the regular staff/student debates, which are
popular all year round! |
