Several years ago, one
of Santa Maria's Food Technology teachers decided to purchase a
commercial coffee machine so that students could be
taught to make real coffee. Since then, students from Year
9 have been taught how to make every kind of coffee
(cappuccino, latte, short black, etc), hot chocolate and tea, and
have also learned how to take orders, provide customer service,
receive payment and help train others. Benedict's, as the
coffee shop has become known, is open before school and at
lunchtime three days a week. Students and staff alike patronise
Benedict's for both take-away and 'have here' hot drinks.
Benedict's also operates on special days such as Open Day.
At right are some photos of the staff members who continue to
make Benedict's happen: Rhonda MacInnes, Sevi Tomadakis and Adrian
Fennessy. Making the coffee is Ramona of Year 9, who makes an
excellent Chai Latte with soy!
Mr Fennessy has devised an electronic ordering and payment
system, which means that Benedict's operates smoothly and
efficiently.
Not only does Benedict's provide new skills for students, but it
also provides a wonderful welcoming, hospitable environment where
staff and students can enjoy each other's company and live the
spirit of Saint Benedict, on whose rule the Good Samaritan Order
and our college was founded.
